'Arena' comes from the above Theodore Roosevelt Man in the Arena quote, which resonated strongly with Brené Brown, shame researcher and avid storyteller of owning our story and loving ourselves. Brené’ brought this quote to popular culture through her research. Her work on shame, vulnerability and courage sits very close to our heart at Arena.
While we cannot speak to this quote as eloquently as Brené - seriously she is amazing - we can share with you our passion and how it sits with our intent and purpose. We believe Brené's work, the quote, and more specifically, the term arena encompasses many concepts that resonate within the field of psychology and is an apt metaphor to explore ourselves and our approach to life. To stand in the arena requires courage: it requires us to embrace our vulnerability and be our authentic selves. This is where we are most likely to find our joy and are able to live a rich, full and meaningful life. Standing in the arena gives us an apt metaphor to explore and develop new strategies to manage our inner critic and filter ex ternal criticism and feedback. The arena is also a place where we can process our shame, where we will get our butts kicked and then pick ourselves up and commit to values-guided actions.
Everyone’s arena is different. Each human has their own battles they must face in their arena. We stack the stands with our champions; those people who we can rely on, who we know we can trust and who help steer us in the right direction. We love that you do not need to be perfect to stand in the arena. Perfect is unobtainable. We are all unique and messy humans. Similarly, we do not need to wait for that perfect moment or wait until the stars align; you just have to dare greatly and stand in the arena. We know we might get knocked down, because that happens in life, but we listen to our champions and draw on our skills to get back up and continue to dare greatly. Why?
